Lancaster General College, now known as the Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences, is a private co-educational four-year college found in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The school offers a several kinds of associate and baccalaureate degree programs, including certificate programs, in healthcare. The school receives a select group of students to study with faculty who are experts in their specific areas. Lancaster General College is the educational bracket of the Lancaster General Health system. The school uses the clinical facilities of the hospital to teach their students with hands-on learning and developing healthcare skills.
The school was established in 1903 as the Lancaster General Hospital School of Nursing. The school was established to provide educational training for the hospital’s nursing staff and to provide the local community with qualified healthcare workers. As the enrollment expanded, so did the school. In 1952, Lancaster General Hospital renewed its commitment to the development of the school and its education by developing several Allied Health Programs. Among the first programs added was Medical Laboratory Science, which has since been renamed as the Clinical Laboratory Sciences. Then in 1960, a program in Radiology Technology was added, followed by a Surgical Technology program.
As healthcare advanced through the years, so was the need to develop more specialized programs for specialized healthcare practitioners. Since 1982, several programs have been added including programs in Nuclear Medicine, Diagnostic Medical Sonography, and Cardiovascular Invasive Specialty. Then in 1994, the hospital and nursing schools combined to form the Lancaster Institute for Health Education, and soon it was granted approval for private school licensure by the Pennsylvania Department of Education
